Description

The X-R remote capsule microphone system is an interchangeable microphone capsule system designed for instrument and custom mounting solutions.  Using the remote cable system, X-R capsules may also be conveniently mounted on the X-R stereo bar.

The X-R remote capsule microphone system has six available capsules that can fit remote system mounts:

  • cardioid:  vent holes without blind hole
  • nearfield cardioid:  vent holes with one blind hole mark
  • cardioid, low sensitivity:  vent holes with two blind hole marks oriented diagonally, representing high-frequency rolloff
  • hypercardioid:  vent holes with two blind hole marks oriented vertically, representing front and rear polar response lobes
  • omnidirectional:  no vent holes
  • omnidirectional, low sensitivity:  no vent holes with two blind hole marks oriented diagonally, representing high-frequency rolloff

The cardioid capsule is intended for general use on all sources where off-axis rejection is important, but a low-frequency rolloff outside the nearfield is not desired.

The nearfield cardioid capsule has reduced farfield low frequency response.  When placed within 30cm (1′) of the source, the capsule’s proximity effect will provide a natural tone on the source with excellent rejection of farfield low frequency signals.  It is recommended for instrument mount in more difficult acoustic environments where low frequency bleed from other instruments must be rejected.  It is also excellent in combination with the omnidirectional capsule using the acoustic low-pass filter; the combined pattern yields the natural low-frequency response of the omnidirectional capsule combined with the precise stereo image of a directional capsule.

The low-sensitivity cardioid and omnidirectional capsules have reduced sensitivity and increased SPL handling for close-mic techniques on very loud sources, such as drums or instrument amplifiers.  Both capsules have attenuated high-frequency response to yield a frequency response similar to dynamic microphones.

The hypercardioid capsule has superior rejection of off-axis signals.  It is especially intended for instrument mount or stereo recording in difficult acoustic environments.

The omnidirectional capsule provides the most natural response when mounted on an instrument.  It may also be used with the table mount as a boundary microphone.  The optional equalization disc provides an on-axis high-frequency boost for enhanced directivity.

All capsules may be attached remotely to the amplifier body with an RCA extension cable.

Powering the X-R capsules

Using the appropriate adaptor cable, the X-R capsules can connect to:

  • phantom power:  RCA-M to XLR-3-M
  • plug-in power:  dual RCA-M to stereo 3.5mm miniplug
  • PC microphone input or mono plug-in power:  RCA-M to 3.5mm miniplug

A minimum of +3V plug-in power is required; +5V or higher is recommended. The capsules contain internal filters that require a load impedance of 6KΩ to meet the specified frequency response.

X-R capsules for use with the remote capsule system are recommended with an RCA female connector; the adaptor cables may thus have either a straight or right-angle male RCA connector to mate with the capsule.  The right-angle mount is recommended for use with the violin and viola/mandolin mounts.

X-R capsules may also connect with major brand wireless transmitters or phantom power adaptors; please inquire for manufacturers not listed.

If desired, the X-R capsules may be ordered with an RCA male connector for direct connection to the X-R capsule amplifier.  RCA female capsules may also be used with the capsule amplifier using the optional RCA male-male adaptor.

X-R adaptor cables use 3mm diameter mono or stereo coaxial cable.

The phantom power XLR adaptor cable requires +9V to +52V phantom power.  The capsule output is on pin 3 (negative polarity), with an impedance-balanced output on pin 2.  Thus, when used into an unbalanced input (as with some portable phantom power supplies), pin 3 should be connected as the signal lead.  The XLR adaptor cable will yield positive polarity when connected to a balanced input amplifier.

On request, pairs of XLR adaptor cables may be joined as a stereo cable.  The standard split is 50cm at the RCA connectors and 25cm at the XLR connectors.

Mounting solutions may be ordered with the microphone from the menu above, or individually from the X-R accessory page.  Also available is an equalization disc for the omnidirectional capsules, which yields a 6dB on-axis boost above 3kHz, for enhanced directivity or improved signal-to-noise ratio.  The equalization disc can be mounted on the omnidirectional capsule when mounted with the wire hanger, 1/4″ thread clip, or capsule amplifier.
